Championship Freecell

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is there any charge for the software?
A: The basic software is free. Upon registering, you will receive 10 free posts. After that, 2 free posts are added to your "bank" every week. A more advanced version of the software and 208 posts are provided with the purchase of a Gold Subscription.

Q: Is the game played on the site or must I download it to my computer?
A. At this time, you must download the software to your computer. In the future, we may offer a Java applet.

Q: Can I play Championship Freecell using WebTV?
A: No.

Q: Can I play Championship Freecell using a Macintosh or Win 3.x operating system?
A: At this time, Championship Freecell is only available for Win 95, 98 and NT systems.

Q: I don't remember my password. What do I do?
A: Email us at info@SoftwareInventions.com. Be sure to email us from the email address that you signed up with. If you remember your handle, please include that with your request.

Q: When entering in the license ID and validation code to launch to start, I received an error message stating the ID and code were not correct.
A: Every time that we have seen this error, it was solved when instead of typing in the id/code, the user used Windows' copy/paste functions. (In your email listing the id and code, highlight the id and then press Ctl-C to copy it. Then go to Championship Freecell, click in the id box and then press Ctl-V to paste the lisence id. Repeat the same process for the code.) This way l's (ells) cannot be mistaken for 1's (ones) or O's (ohs) for 0's (zeros).

Q: How is the "best" score determined?
A: The first criteria is lowest number of free cells used. If there is a tie, it is determined by least number of moves.

Q: How can I tell if my score was accepted on the web site?
A: After uploading your score, look at the status column of "Best Scores Summary". If your game post is labelled as "accepted" your handle will appear on the site both in our "Most Recent Winners" section and as the game winner on the corresponding Competition Stats page. If it says "bested", this means that it did not beat the best score so far and will not appear on the site at all. Posts will only be deducted from your account if your game score is "accepted".

Q: What does "No Permission" mean?
Q: Having different sectors enables different players to compete at a level appropriate for their current ability (rank). The Competition Stats page will show you which sectors correspond to which ranks. (You can go to your player page to view your current rank.) When you post scores and receive "No Permission", you have gotten too good for the sector that you are playing in. You must now move up to play in a more advanced sector! No posts will be deducted from your account when you reeceive a "No Permission" message.

Q: I am unable to post my scores. What is wrong?
A: Check the following two items
(1) You might have started the Freecell application prior to logging in to your ISP. You need not be logged in while playing the game. But, when you want to post your scores, you will need to:

a) shut down Freecell
b) connect to the Internet
c) start Freecell
d) post your scores
(If you did did attempt to post without following the above procedure, we recommend rebooting your computer and trying again.)

(2) Check under Options/Configuration to make sure that the settings have not been corrupted:
host: www.halibut.com
prefix: /~cstaley/cgi-bin/

Q: If I don't post before I quit the program does it lose all of my games?
A: No. Unless you explicity delete them, you can always send them at a later time.

Q: Is there a site where I can learn more about Freecell in general?
A: Try wgreview's site.

Q: The Prediction feature appears to have a bug. I got into a position where I obviously couldn't win the game, and it didn't warn me that the game was lost.
A: It's not broken. Really. It's not. To be sure a game is still winnable, use the "Predict Once" menu option, with at least 8,000 lookahead states. If it still doesn't warn you, then there is a way to win, believe it or not!

Q: A link to my home page used to show up on my personal player page but now it is gone. What happened?
A: You were probably bumped from all of your leadership positions. The home page link is an added perk for being a sector president/vice president or group leader/lieutenant.

Q: Do you accept credit payment for the Gold Subscription?
A: Not at this time but we do add the posts to your account immediately upon receipt of a check.
